  • the Server is Down – New Modem Activated By Comcast

SO the modem was definitely fuckin’ up things at my parents house this past week. Ever since this big thunderstorm that knocked the power out last week. And even before that my router I had plugged in for them was definitely acting up and almost locking up sometimes or dropping its wifi network at random. That problem was intermittent and seemed to be solved by propping it up off the carpet onto a plastic lid. I think it was overheating or something. But nevermind that, the fuckin’ modem from Comcast wasn’t even supplying internet to the PCs, no matter what ethernet port we tried in the back of the modem. And also the xfinitywifi that comes by default on in the modem was fuckin’ up. It just kept hanging forever or maybe delivering a 1 webpage out of every 50 tries. It was weird problem. Either way, we fixed it by running to Best Buy and grabbing an Arris DOCSIS 3.0 SB6141 for $60. After about half an hour of resetting the thing and registering it with the guy on Comcast and him rebooting it a bunch of times we finally got it to work. Feels nice to have solid internet again. I can’t wait for it to go out again. I can only imagine what it’ll be next…

  • How Do I Play Music Over Discord?

Much easier than what I did for Ventrilo…

    It’s a series of steps.

    1. Procure an extra computer to play the music with. Can be of almost any power strength.
    2. Do this:

Get yourself one of these: 3.5mm Audio Cable Male-to-Male and tell your computer to literally go fuck itself with those plugs…

That’s how you get music into Discord. The better the sound card the better the sound quality, although Discord’s sound channel qualities top out at 96 KHz because they are godless, cultureless developer husks. One day they will update it. Right?

  • How to Update Youtube DL

    youtube-dl -U

or, if you installed with pip,

    sudo pip install –upgrade youtube-dl

  • Finally Turned Everything Back On

It only took me a whole month, but I finally got everything turned back on and connected. Why did it take me so long? Well first off I had boxes upon boxes of stuff blocking my path to the area where I wanted to set up my servers. And I wanted to make sure they were all on a WeMo Insight Smart Power Switch. Now that it’s all settled I officially have it all set up the way I wanted. Radio station server is right next to the ubuntu server that runs all this ish.

    Updating the Platform:
So after having set up the radio station again. I have to write down what I’m currently using as a platform, and then also I will add how I interface with that platform.

It’s a Windows 10 box running legitimate Windows as far as I’m concerned (im not). Along with this software:

    • Foobar2000 – This plays the music tracks out the 3.5″ audio output.
    • youtube-dl – This open source software package allows you to download youtube videos as mp3 files.
    • Foobar2000 Controller plugin – I use this freeware to remotely control the radio station and skip songs.
    • Discord – This voice chat software allows my radio station to join as a radio-bro user and stream directly into discord channels.
    • Icecast 2 – This is a streaming media server that supports mp3.
    • Git – This is used to manage my Icecast 2 website customization.
    • Cmder – This is a command-line program that I use in place of Windows default cmdline.

    Interfacing with the Radio:
To control the radio station I have a few different options. For listening there’s more options as well, but I end up using the same way every time.
    Controls

    • RDP – Remote Desktop Protocol, most pain-in-the-ass way, but gets every job done.
    • Foobar2000 Remote Controller App – Android app that does what it says it does
    • Foober2000 api calls – I haven’t really tried this, but I’ve researched it, I can eventually control from my own app that utilizes the api

    Playback

    • WWW – Web Browser, any of them, even on the phone, just open that up, and on desktops it starts playing instantly (haha, fuck you is what i was thinking when i programmed in that bit), and then on mobile you just hit the play button.
    • MP3u file – An MP3 playlist file is downloadable from the radio site. This will allow you to stream the station’s content straight to VLC media player or whatever media player you have that is capable of playing such a file.
  • Move out

I have less than 8 hours until I kick off the move out of this last apartment. I learned quite a lot here, and as I bring out the big books of old app ideas, weird musings about identity crises and values, and just generally trinket-y shit, I will update this blog as I see fit. As for now I’d like to highlight that this song has been “randomly” popping into my head the past month, but as the final hour draws near I realize yet again that it’s just a perfect meme-y song for the situation…tongue-in-cheek…

  • What routines I have currently running from my phone & house….

So for the past year or so I’ve strived to make my life more automated. I moved out on my own and had little reason to fear judgement or repercussion for any weird habits I might pick up while embarking on this journey, such as shouting to my Alexa from the other room to add something to my shopping list or what have you. Here are some of the most useful changes I have made:

    • Send a message from your android phone when you leave work
    • Automatically turn up the volume on your Android phone when you miss a call from a specific number
    • Get a daily digest email with a log of all the new SMS messages you’ve received
    • Automatically back up new texts you receive on your Android device to a Google spreadsheet
    • Get an email whenever a new Craigslist post matches your search. With search “cisco switch”
    • Get an email whenever a new Craigslist post matches your search. With search “toyota celica supra 1985”
    • Log how much time you spend at home/work/etc. Log entering/exiting merchandise mart on Google Drive.
    • Log how much time you spend at home/work/etc. Logs entering/exiting my apartment area on Google Drive.
    • Log how much time you spend at home/work/etc. Logs entering/exiting CDK HQ on Google Drive.
    • Turn off WiFi when you leave home to save power. Fires when exiting my apartment area.
    • Track your work hours in Google calendar. Fires when entering merchandise mart
    • Automatically turn your Android device’s Wifi on when you get home. Fires when entering my apartment area.
    • Text your lost Android phone to turn the ringer volume up 100%. text “lostphone” to my device and it will turn itself up to 100%
    • Automatically unmute your Android phone when you get home. Fires when entering my apartment area.
    • Records that my phone got answered at a specific time. Records in a Google sheets spreadsheet.
    • Whenever I add an item to my Amazon Echo todo list it adds it to an Evernote checklist titled “Echo To Do List”
    • When your Spotify Discover weekly playlist is updated for the week, it gets archived as my own personal playlist, and saves it to a Google Drive spreadsheet called “My Shazam Tracks”. This was my attempt to auto-add shazammed tracks to Spotify. Or something like that…
    • Text me my location (this is a button on my phone’s homescreen) so I can send it to my friends.
    • Get directions home (this is a button on my phone’s homescreen)
    • Press a button to track work hours in Google Drive (never use it)
    • Press a button to make your Hue color lights loop
    • Press a button to get an automated phone call and get yourself out of an awkward situation
    • Unsilence your phone at the same time every day (turned off)
    • Alert me when I’m kicked off my home Wifi so I don’t burn through my data plan.
    • Email yourself your To Do List when you ask Alexa what’s on your ToDo list
    • Email yourself your shopping list when you ask Alexa what’s on your shopping list
    • Call yourself when you ask Alexa to “trigger find my phone”
    • Automatically send todo items to todoist when you ask Alexa to add something to your ToDos
    • Automatically send grocery items to todoist when you ask Alexa to add something to grocery list
    • Mute my phone when I get to the office & turn on vibrate. Fires when I enter merch mart area.

I also have had a hankering for improving communication lines with my next relationship. These are the apps and tweaks I have added to become the perfect virtual boyfriend:

    • If incoming text matches search (thanks), respond automatically (you’re welcome)
    • Good husband SMS:Respond to texts from your wife with “Yes sweetheart, I love you!”
    • Automatically send a message from your Android phone when you leave work
  • Ronald Jenkees

I’ve loved this guy for awhile. His live youtube jams are better than produced tunes.

  • How do I play music over Vent?

(Settings for onboard soundchip. Addin soundcards usually provide their own control-panel app)

configure vent to run multiple instances, one for music and one for regular talking.
rt-clik on the vent desktop icon / properties / add a -m to the end of the ‘Target’ line.

(ex: “C:\Program Files\Ventrilo\Ventrilo.exe” -m) the space before the -m is required

configure the music instance with a different login name so you can tell them apart when connected.
(note: if you ever need to make configuration changes, exit all copies, startup one, make the changes, then exit and restart all copies of vent)

goto Windows-control-panel / sound / Recording tab / rt-click in window / check ‘show disabled devices’ / rt-click on ‘Stereo Mix’ and select ‘properties’ / Levels tab / set volume level (50%) / Advanced tab / select ‘2 channel 44 Hz’ in pulldown window’ / click OK

select Playback tab / rt-click on ‘Speakers’ and select ‘properties’ / Levels tab / mute the microphone and any other jacks that are not in use (click on the little speaker icon next to each one)

reboot to make sure settings are in effect

in vent setup/voice tab, set both input/output devices to the device name of the soundcard (ex: Realtek…) and check the ‘Use Directsound’ boxes

in the hardware mixer section, set Mixer=Stereo Mix, mux=Master Volume, and line=Master Volume
(use the ‘line volume’ slider to adjust the microphone output volume)

set sensitivity=1 or 0 and uncheck PTT (setting sensitivity=1 will stop broadcasting during times of no outgoing signal, like in-between songs or if you pause/stop the music. It will also help flush the buffers)

In vent setup/events tab, set all events to “Nothing”

on the main screen, check the ‘mute sound’ box at the bottom

note: if you don’t want to listen to the music coming back thru vent then on your talking client select the music client > rt-click > user > mute

  • Security Settings in the Modern World

Security has changed a lot in the past few years. Lots of large breaches being publicized. You can download most of these from the regular internet provided you have the right torrent for one of them.

That means it’s a lot easier to log in to someone’s account with data from one of these dumps.

Here are the steps I’ve taken to mitigate this:

    • Install ESET Smart Security on my phone and computer
    • Remove all saved passwords from Chrome
    • Stop Chrome from auto-saving passwords
    • Disable and uninstall LastPass password manager. Also deleted my account with them
    • Start remembering your passwords by writing down the usernames and a simple reminder to help you find out which one is for which service
    • Keep this excel sheet as an encrypted document in a thumbdrive in your safe
    • Buy a safe that you can keep hidden away or bolted down
    • Store all valuable identity documents in the safe, as well as your encrypted password-helper sheets
    • NEVER WRITE DOWN YOUR PASSWORD ANYWHERE!
